Shatru Samhar Homam is done to please Lord Karthikeya, the elder son of Lord Shiva. Lord Karthikeya is the commander of the Army of the Gods and protects Gods from the enemies. Lord Karthikeya is also called Lord Subramanyam in the Southern parts of India where he is the main deity. Lord Subramanyam had been blessed with various superpowers and is also considered as the lord of love.

Karthikeya or Muruguna, as popularly called in Southern India, has six faces and is Lord of War. His birth traces to the story where a demon Tarak, got a boon from Brahma that he would only be killed by the hands of the son of Shiva. Shiva had lost his first wife Sati and was living the life of an astute. Tarak was of the belief that Shiva would never marry again and he would not have any son, so he would become immortal. The Gods were tormented by Tarakasur, and all Gods went to Lord Brahma for any solution to this problem. He told them If Shiva would marry again and a son would be born to him, only that could bring an end to that solution. Shakti took birth in the house of Himalaya as Uma and performed an acute penance to get Shiva as her husband. Later both of them got married and gave birth to Karthikeya, who latter killed Tarakasur in a fierce war.

Karthikeya is considered as the philosophical-warrior as he was both a warrior and a very knowledgeable God, who was an expert of Shaivism. He is seen providing knowledge about Shiva to his disciple Vamdeva in Shiva Purana. His knowledge and valour make him different from other Gods who are either warriors or the embodiments of knowledge.

Worshipping Skanda, or Karthikeya provides protection from evil powers, negative energies, enemies, and fears. This puja also nullifies many Doshas and helps in getting positive results from unfavourable planets too.
